Brookings Kite and Bike Festival offers fun for families
Bring on the breeze! The 14th Annual Brookings Kite and Bike Festival will be held Sunday, June 23, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Fishback Soccer Fields on South Medary Avenue and South 20th St. This free event offers family activities and attractions including face painting, vendors and, of course, kites and bikes.
The festival will have plenty of opportunities for Brookings residents to fly a kite, whether they bring one from home, buy one from a vendor at the event or make one at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota kite workshop on June 22 from 1-2 p.m.
Under all the festival’s flying colors, children 18 months and older can try out the Strider Bike Adventure Zone.
Larry Browning of the South Dakota State University Physics Department will lead children in creating and launching paper rockets, and American Kite Association member Mike Gee, Jamestown, N.D., will once again bring his collection of massive, elaborate demonstration kites to add to the fun in the sky.
“Mike Gee is the critical key to our continued success, as Mike’s gigantic kites create a ‘wow’ factor for children of all ages,” said Lynn Verschoor, director of the South Dakota Art Museum. The museum has been a sponsor of the festival since the first year the event was held.
Additional Kite and Bike Festival sponsors include the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, Sioux River Bicycles and Fitness, the Optimist Club of Brookings and the Brookings Convention and Visitors Bureau.
