You’re invited to the biggest birthday bash of the year when the doors open to the all new Children’s Museum of South Dakota on Sunday, September 12, 2010 in Brookings, South Dakota.
Founder Dale Larson said, “The opening of the Children’s Museum of South Dakota will be the result of four years of planning to construct a facility for families to enjoy as they play and learn together. Innumerable hours were spent working to make this a special place for the city of Brookings, the state of South Dakota, and the broader four-state region. The board of directors, the staff and volunteers are excited to open this hands-on discovery center for families to enjoy now and for many years into the future.”
The party begins at 12:30 pm on the museum lawn with the largest silly swap trade South Dakotans have ever seen. Children are invited to bring their shape rubber bands to swap with friends, old and new. Plus, each child will receive a free silly swap shape of Kidoodle, CMSD’s mascot. Collect tattoos, strike a pose at the family fun photo booth, and get your groove on with a performance by the Pride of the Dakotas Drum Line.
Dale Larson, Executive Director Suzanne Hegg and Brookings Mayor Tim Reed will lead the countdown to the museum’s opening at 1:00 pm. Guests are invited to explore the museum’s seven galleries featuring interactive, hands-on learning activities. The museum also features a unique 1.5 acre outdoor play area complete with Mama T-Rex, a life-size animatronics dinosaur.
Explore the museum all afternoon and then stay for a free performance at 5 pm by Recycled Percussion, runner-up of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent”. Recycled Percussion has emerged from underground live show sensation to one of the most powerful touring shows in the United States and now at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
With powerful industrial drumming backed by hip-hop/funk DJ Pharaoh, Recycled Percussion brings their unique style and power percussion show to South Dakota for just one evening. The band mixes their gritty assault on buckets, power tools, ladders and anything else they can get their sticks on with a sense of humor and gravity defying athleticism. Sponsored by the City of Brookings’ Visitor Promotions Committee, the performance is free and open to the general public.

ABOUT THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM:
The Children’s Museum of South Dakota, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, will open its doors and welcome visitors September 12th. It boasts 21,000 square feet of interactive indoor exhibits and programming as well as 1.5 acre outdoors exhibit space. The museum was created on 4-acres of land in a 38,000 square foot elementary school, originally built in 1936, on the edge of downtown Brookings and in the heart of the Brookings Historic District. Renovations began on the building in fall 2008 to bring the building back to its original state. The Children’s Museum of South Dakota is the first broad-based, cross-discipline children’s museum in the state of South Dakota. The purpose of the Children’s Museum of South Dakota is to promote learning for children of all ages and abilities through interactive, hands-on exhibits and demonstrations. The museum is a welcoming, lively, and entertaining environment that sparks learning through imagination, creativity, and discovery, a place where children and adults learn through play.
